Parish History

Our Anniversary Year

The Diocese of Metuchen was created in February 1982.  We are pleased to say that our church is the one parish that is dedicated under the title of Queenship of Mary, patroness of the Diocese of Metuchen. Bishop Theodore McCarrick (now Cardinal) decreed that the Queenship of Mary Church be established on October 22, 1982.  Originally founded to serve the people of Cranbury and Plainsboro, it began as a mission of St. Cecelia parish in Monmouth Junction (itself a newly independent parish).  The first Mass was celebrated in the Wicoff School in Plainsboro in November 1982.

Land for a church (known as The Cooper Tract) was purchased on the corner of Scudders Mill & Dey Roads in 1984.  Father Frank Piazza was named the first Administrator of the new church in October 1986 and a rectory on Linden Lane was purchased in May 1987 when Father Piazza was named Pastor of the church.  Due to the continued growth of our parish family, the celebration of the Mass was moved to Community Middle School in Plainsboro.

The parish held a Groundbreaking Ceremony on November 20, 1988 and on August 20, 1990 the new church building was dedicated by Bishop Edward T. Hughes.

Father Edward J. Struzik was named the second Pastor of the parish on October 8, 1991.  A new rectory at 16 Dey Road in Plainsboro, closer to the church, was purchased in May 1996 and an office complex was soon added.  A bronze statue of Our Lady & Child was unveiled and dedicated on August 24, 1997 to commemorate the fifteen year anniversary of the founding of the parish.  This statue stands as a welcome to the parishioners and visitors to our parish.

When Father Struzik moved to a new parish in 2001, he was briefly followed by Father Edward Flanagan.  Soon, Father Michael Saharic was appointed as our new Administrator on October 14, 2001.  Father Robert W. Medley came to the church as Administrator in August 2002 and was installed as our third Pastor on June 29, 2003.

The church underwent major repairs, beginning in 2003.  They were finally completed in 2004.

The Queenship of Mary Church now stands ready to serve the current and future needs of its parish families, having grown in number from a start of merely 50 families to currently over 1200 families!
